Jim Turney was elected unopposed to the non-partisan city of Altamonte Springs commission in 2017 when the incumbent withdrew from the election for a two year term. In 1985 he was elected the chair of the LP national committee and re-elected in 1987 while chairing the convention where Ron Paul won the LP presidential nomination. He has been an LP candidate and campaign manager for federal and statewide office and was a co-founder of the LP of Virginia in the 1970s and a co-founder of Libertarian International in 1981 (renamed International Society for Individual Liberty and now Liberty International).
Jim formed a business to help organize and record scores of libertarian conferences across the US and Europe, an early Internet startup that continues today and a business advising ‘life settlement’ investment fund asset managers. He graduated from James Madison University, BA in 1972, while working as a country music DJ in commercial radio. He volunteered for service in the US Army in 1973 after the military draft was ended, and re-enlisted for active reserve in 1979.
He became a libertarian in 1964 and organized high school and college chapters of the Young Americans for Freedom (YAF) until the famous libertarian split when he headed the Virginia delegation to the St Louis national convention in 1969.
